The Texas Chain Saw Massacre movie review:

Five teenagers driving through Texas are making an unpleasant encounter in the person of a serial killer armed with a chain saw and disguised with a leather mask.

To make things more interesting, the family of the serial killer is composed of various cannibalistic members that are also enjoying the presence of fresh meat.

The first thing that's impressive in this classic slasher movie is the beauty of the photography. The action takes place in the desert and the viewer can easily feel the dirt, the heat and the pain of every character onscreen.

Some shots in the beginning of the movie are absolutely breathtaking (think of the camera work near the porch of the house) and they do set the tone for the rest of the movie.

The actors are doing an honest job although some of them (mostly the girls) are overacting a little bit too much when screaming or running. Then again, it was probably the standard in the 70s!

The music is also good, but it could've been more subtle in some occasions. The gore scenes are well-made and this movie is definitely not for the faint of heart!

The movie deals with cannibalism, murders, hooks, blood, insanity and obviously, a chain saw! Some scenes are pretty graphic and effective!

However, it's not the first (or the last) movie to depict murders and cannibalism! Why is Tobe Hooper's masterpiece so frightening and horrifying?

Perhaps it's because the movie is lightly based on the real-life murderer Ed Gein who had killed women in the 50s in order to become one! Perhaps it's because the movie is filmed with a "fake" amateur style to give more realism to the story!

Maybe it's because the story is so repulsive that our brain is not able to believe such a story! Maybe it's all those answers! Who knows!

It's a movie that feels terribly genuine and raw! The best example of what a perfect slasher movie should look like!
