The Ring movie review:
A mysterious videotape. Four teenagers killed under strange circumstances. A weird urban legend saying that anyone who is watching this videotape will die within seven days. A curious journalist who decides to investigate this case.
Just mix all the ingredients above to get a movie that is dark, engaging, weird and frightening at times! Welcome to the fascinating world of "The Ring"!
Directed by Gore Verbinski (the same one behind the trilogy of "Pirates of the Caribbean") and featuring a talented Naomi Watts, "The Ring" is a great suspense/thriller/horror movie based on a fascinating idea: the fact that too much television can kill you (Ok, it's not the case, but I thought it could be a good idea!).
Enough jokes! Unlike most slasher movies based on original ideas (Like the "Final Destination" series), this one is not your stupid teenage movie with a predictable ending and a lack of intelligence and brain!
"The Ring" is well-written and very thrilling. The atmosphere in the movie is dark and cold, the cast is just perfect while the special effects are well-executed and not too distracting or annoying.
The pace of the movie is slow, but it doesn't mean that it's not engaging or fascinating. In fact, this is one of the rare movie that does take advantage of the lack of action and face pace editing that don't necessarily make a movie more fun to watch!
Since the story is quite intriguing, you never feel bored or sleepy even if some scenes are long and loaded with dialogues. All you want to do is uncover some pieces of the puzzle hoping to find the answer the main character is looking for!
The ending is a little confusing. Let's just say that it's one of these movies that can be interpreted differently by anyone who has seen it already, so don't be discouraged if you think that you did not "get it"!
Some scenes are quite memorable, especially the one in the end involving a television set, a young girl and a man!
"The Ring" is a good horror thriller featuring a fascinating puzzle to solve, a great cast and some effective shocking sequences!
