The blob movie review:
In the late 50s, while a young couple is travelling on a desert road, a meteorite is falling on a farm a few miles away from the two teenagers. An old farmer is rushing to the crash site only to be attacked by a jelly-like creature.
The young man (played by a 30 year old Steve McQueen!) is rescuing the old man and takes him to the nearest doctor. Surrounded by fresh flesh, the Blob is growing endlessly as it is absorbing and killing more and more human victims!
Everything that makes a movie from the 50s so charming is displayed in this one. Cool cars, cute teenagers (innocence and hope), strange monsters... If you want to see a typical horror movie from this era, then "The Blob" is definitely for you!
However, the movie is also loaded with annoying stuff from the 50s! Bad acting, weak scenario, stupid cops... the cool thing is that it can also be interpreted as being part of the charm (or the qualities) of this movie!
I know, the actors are sometimes overacting! The special effects are average (although sometimes they are quite good for such an old film)! The story is evolving at a slow pace with a very linear structure, but if you don't mine all this, it's a fun movie to watch!
I am not sure if the movie colors were restored or not, but the version I saw was quite amazing! I had the feeling I was watching a movie from the 70s with a good transfer from film to DVD.
Like I said earlier, don't expect a movie loaded with special effects or action. In fact, the creature is only visible in a total of 3 or 4 minutes throughout the entire movie. The relationship between characters (and how they are reacting to an impossible situation) is what really matters here.
If you want to watch a fun movie from the 50s, then "The Blob" might be exactly what you are looking for! If you hate such movie, stay away from it!
