Seven movie review:
David Fincher is a good director who is able to make a nice movie about monsters (Alien 3). He is also able to work in a small and claustrophobic environment (Panic Room). Finally, he can also take a scenario and cut it into a challenging puzzle (The Game).
Fortunately, he is also able to take everything that he did right from the movies mentioned above and make a masterpiece (I know that some of these movies were made after "Se7en", but my point is still good! ;)
In "Se7en", two detectives are hunting a serial killer who is committing murders based on the Seven Deadly Sins! As you should expect, each victim will pay the price according to one of the seven specific deadly sins!
Everything in this movie could've been cliche or mishandled by Fincher! One black cop working with a white one! A murdered who is using a specific pattern to kill his victims! Shocking scenes and a dark atmosphere!
So many traps that David Fincher is handling beautifully to create a movie that is refreshing, deep, disturbing and even terrifying! Movies involving serial killers can be loaded with stereotypes or boring dialogues, but not this one!
The atmosphere in "Se7en" is perfect! I did not have a chance to see this movie again in Bluray, but I am 100% sure that the experience must be fascinating and thrilling! The colors are so vivid and creepy in DVD, it should be overwhelming in Bluray!
The scenario of "Se7en" is also very well-written! Even if the killer is not involved as much as you might expect (at least, not physically in front of us), the puzzle is very interesting to solve and the ending is shocking and very creative!
The cast of the movie is solid and the duo Brad Pitt/Morgan Freeman is really a great match! Even Gwyneth Paltrow does everything right in a small, but important role!
Don't expect a fast pace movie with multiple shocking scenes or explosions! The characters are the real stars of the movie and Fincher does take the time to explore every details about them!
Long scenes involving intense dialogues are never boring! There is always something else to look at, to listen to! "Se7en" is not just a deep movie visually, but also in content!
Like I said earlier, there are some disturbing scenes in "Se7en" and even if you don't necessarily see lots of blood, you might feel quite uncomfortable with some of them!
This movie is already more than 15 years old! However, it's still one of the best serial killer film made to date!
A great masterpiece that should set the standard for any serial killer movies involving shocking scenes or a puzzle based scenario!
