Land of the dead movie review:
George A Romero doesn't need any introduction! The father of zombie movies is still pretty active at the venerable age of 70 years old and counting!
From the first "Night of the living dead" in 1968 to his latest participation in the movie "The Crazies" in 2010, he is without any doubt the master of zombie movies!
The 2005 version of "Land of the dead" is another milestone for this great director and fortunately, unlike "Survival of the Dead" (2009) and "Diary of the Dead" (2007), this movie will probably satisfy the gore (and zombie) lover in you!
In a distant society, zombies are ruling the world! To make things even worse, they are now able to learn and accomplish simple task, making them even more dangerous than ever!
Like any good society, the rich are living in fancy skyscrapers while the poor are left all by themselves on the street, fighting endlessly against the living dead!
However, things are about to change when the relationship between Cholo (a guy who brings supplies to the city played by John Leguizamo) and Kaufman (the city protector played by Dennis Hopper) is getting from bad to worst!
Gore lovers will be pleased! The movie (although it has too many dark scenes in my opinion!) is loaded with blood, zombies and fresh flesh!
The cast is great even if some of the so-call "humans" do look more dead than the zombies themselves!
Like any Romero movie, a sociological comment is also blended into the scenario, but this time, it might be a little too obvious and even too distracting at times!
It was refreshing to see that even if zombies are dead, they can evolved and learn a little bit from their environment, making them more interesting (for us) and dangerous (for the characters!).
They are not as fast and aggressive as the ones in "Dawn of the dead" (2004), but since they are wiser, it does create a creepy atmosphere!
Don't forget the cameo appearances by Tom Savini (famous makeup artist from the 80s) or Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright from "Shaun of the dead"!
"Land of the dead" is a great zombie movie that will please any gore lover for sure!
