Friday the 13th the movie review:
Slasher movies involving teenagers are always following the same recipe: Take a group of unconscious kids, put them in a common place where a psychotic killer is rampaging and expect the worst!
Don't forget to include a scene with an animal (in this case, a snake), a scene with a policeman warning the kids about the danger, another one with two teenagers having sex and finally a scene with one of the kids playing a trick on the others (a false drowning for example). Mix the whole thing and you're on your way to success!
If you want to see where it all begins, then perhaps you should watch "Friday the 13th", the original one made back in 1980.
The storyline is simple: in 1957, Jason Voorhees (without the hockey mask!) drowns at a young age. Years later, a group of young counselors tries to re-open Camp Crystal Lake in order to offer a place for kids to have fun in the summer. But no one will have fun this time around!
To really enjoy this movie, you must absolutely go back in the 70-80s period (sort to speak). The pace of the movie is a little slow and some scenes are a bit too long.
The killings are not as brutal as what we are used seeing these days, but they are not that bad either (the one with Kevin Bacon is quite well-done).
You won't find original and creative deaths like the ones available in the "Final destination" movies either. Here, the killer is really in love with his knife!
But the end of the movie is funny enough (cat fight anyone?) and does open the door for a sequel (well... numerous, if not too much, sequels!).
The charm of the movie is really the nice, natural look of the 70s and the slight amateurish look that comes out of it.
You probably won't be scared or traumatize by this original Jason killing spree (is he really the killer?), but you'll have fun seeing where it all begins.
This movie is also the first one starring Kevin Bacon in a major role, but don't expect to see him a lot since his character isn't lucky enough to make it until the end!
So if you enjoy good old slasher movies with unknown actors (at the time, anyway) set in the 70s (nice hair!) then this one is for you!
If you only live to see movies with CGI scenes, you might want to pass on this one!
I'm giving this one 8 stars for setting all the standards in the slasher movie genre!
